I love going to Bowling Green Park. Not only is it one of the oldest and most historical parks in New York City but one of the most picturesque. All the buildings surrounding it have some historical … Full review by Justin W

The BULL at one end, and the Native American Museum at the other. Nice little stroll in between. The museum is free admission. Full review by srpanderson70

The Bowling Green in lower Manhattan is a nice little park. It’s near the Raging Bull which is the symbol of Wall Street. Nice park! Full review by StephenCr0ss

Q:
I've read dozens of reviews of Bowling Green Park and viewed even more photos of the park and goggled on the internet every phrase I could dream up to answer my question. So far I know more than I need to know about the bull; but I have never seen one review even mention the name of the building that shows up in most photos of the fountain/flowers. It is large, with 2 statues in the front center, mindful of the library on 5th Avenue. It could be historic or just an office building. There are apparently letters across the front near the top, but I have never been able to read them. Anybody that can curb my curiosity?

In one of those twists of silly fate after finally posting the question, I stumbled upon the fact that the building is actually 'The Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House', which I never knew the exact location of before. It is situated logically at the port of New York, but unusually oriented facing away from the port. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Cass Gilbert, designer of the impressive building designed many other prominent buildings, including The Woolworth Building. The four statues in front of the 'Alexander U.S. Custom House' are known as "Four Continents' they are four female figures of limestone sitting on large entrance pedestals and represent America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. Housed in the building are the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and The National Archives of NY City. Thanks to the response from Stuart W. to my question, I now know that the Smithsonian American Indian Museum is located there as well.
