Early morning commuters will want to be alert for icy road conditions as a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain moves in on Monday morning.

Lake effect snow and freezing drizzle are creating slick conditions across parts of Chicagoland today, with the wintry weather expected to continue through this evening and into tonight. Any untreated surfaces are likely to be icy,

While some areas won't see much snowfall or any at all, a band of lake-effect snow is expected to develop starting Sunday night, possibly dumping several inches of snow in far northeastern Illinois.

Untreated roads will be slippery as freezing drizzle sets the stage for more snow to come, a local meteorologist said.

The seasonably cold January weather is sticking around Chicagoland this week. Early-morning temperatures Wednesday were in the single digits away from the lake and in the teens closer to the lake, with winds out of the northwest dropping wind-chill values to around zero in some locations.
