Trump posted on social media that hiking taxes on anyone, even the rich, could stir a political backlash, reviving the “Read my lips: No new taxes” warnings of the Bush-era that helped topple a president. The post came days after he floated the idea of higher taxes on those single filers earning $2.5 million and above.

GOP Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Florida told CNN’s Pamela Brown he’s “open to the discussion” around tax hikes for the top income earners as part of the massive bill of Trump’s legislative priorities but said discussions within his party are still ongoing and he’s “not there yet.

On the chopping block could be a litany of Trump demands, including a permanent extension of the tax cuts passed during his first term.
