After being discharged from the hospital, he will need to take it easy recovering at home, but doctors said he should be able to attend the first day of the new legislative session.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen is set to return home Friday after falling from a horse over the weekend. In an update, Pillen’s medical team said he will continue recovery at the Governor’s Residence in Lincoln. Pillen will return to his office activities next week, according to the governor’s office.

Governor Jim Pillen spent Christmas in the hospital undergoing surgery to stabilize broken ribs, after being bucked off one of his horses. His office released an update that the surgery was a success.

His office said the "the governor's injuries were serious but not life-threatening and could have been much worse."

The governor is expected to remain in the hospital "for several days” following the incident, his office announced on Sunday, Dec. 22
