A Swedish court on Tuesday sentenced a 52-year-old woman to 12 years in prison on genocide charges, in the country's first court case over crimes by the Islamic State group against the Yazidi minority.

The woman, identified as 52-year-old Swedish citizen Lina Ishaq, returned to Sweden in 2020 and is currently serving time for other offences committed in Syria.

Lina Ishaq, 52, a Swedish citizen, was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity as well as war crimes. The court says her crimes warranted a sentence of 16 years, but taking a previous sentence into account set the sentence to 12 years.
