The secretary of state lashed out on social media over comments the ambassador reportedly made in Johannesburg that were critical of the Trump administration.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that South Africa’s ambassador to the U.S. is a “race-baiting politician” who is no longer welcome in the country — the latest sign of tension between the Trump administration and the African nation.

Rasool made particular mention of Vice President JD Vance’s support for Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany political party, and the prominence within the Trump administration of Elon Musk, a White South African who has also supported conservative political movements in other countries.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Friday evening on social media that South Africa’s ambassador to the U.S. was barred from entering the country. Rubio shared reporting from the far-right media outlet Breitbart News comments by Ambassador Embrahim Rasool linking President Donald Trump to White supremacy.

There has been no immediate response from South Africa's embassy in Washington.
