Penn State men’s ice hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time in the program’s history on Sunday, defeating Connecticut 3-2 in an overtime shootout. Penn State fell behind twice in regulation but recovered each time, as Dane Dowiak and JJ Wiebusch scored to force overtime in the regional final.
An overtime goal by sophomore forward Matt DiMarsico propelled Penn State past UConn, 3-2, and into the Frozen Four for the first time in program history — and it’s much more than 13 seasons if you include the years of club-level success and support that set the foundation for the varsity program.
The UConn Huskies take on the Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday, March 30 with a spot in the Frozen Four up for grabs.
The Nittany Lions, which played just three hours from campus as regional host, went through a pair of Hockey East teams to make their first Frozen Four.
