South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley has created an environment in which rival teams feel not only challenged but also excited to play against a powerhouse program in a city that has become a mecca of sorts for women’s basketball.
In January, those efforts were rewarded. For the first time in NCAA Tournament history and at a pivotal point in college athletics, women’s basketball teams will receive payouts proportionate to their success on court.
The Blue Devils held South Carolina to just 54 points, significantly below their 80.5 points-per-game average. Duke also limited the Gamecocks to season lows in field goals made, total attempts, and assists. Their defensive intensity kept them competitive despite offensive struggles throughout the contest.
