Babar Azam and Shan Masood created a world record for the opening pair after being asked to follow-on by South Africa. Babar missed out on his century and was dismissed for 81. Shan ended the day with a score of unbeaten 102.

Babar Azam, who has not scored an international century since August 2023, fell short again when he was caught in the gully off Marco Jansen 14 minutes before the close of play.
