N.Y. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand have reached out to U.S. Health Secretary Robert Kennedy, Jr., demanding the “insulting,” “un-American” cuts to the program be rescinded.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand sent a letter Monday to Kennedy reminding him that in a pre-confirmation meeting with them that he committed to ensuring that 9/11 first responders and survivors would continue to get the care they need.

The senators emphasized their efforts to secure bipartisan support and $1.7 billion in funding for the program, which provides medical care for 9/11 responders. They warned that staffing cuts would break the nation’s commitment to those suffering from 9/11-related health issues.

Up to 20% of staff at the WTC Health Program were impacted by cuts of probationary workers and buyouts, U.S. senators said in a letter.
