The San Diego Padres are reportedly taking taking interest in signing a World Series champion after missing out on Roki Sasaki.

In San Diego, news that one-man Powerball ticket Roki Sasaki has decided to join the Dodgers was more than a gut punch. It was a steel-toed boot to the shin, a Clydesdale stomp to the foot, a right hook to the jaw. This hurt in all kinds of ways, big and bigger than big.

The big prize landed on Friday. Pitcher Roki Sasaki announced that he was signing with the Dodgers, spurning the Blue Jays and Padres in the process. That loss is even more painful for the Padres as they not only built their offseason plans around Sasaki but will have to face him for the foreseeable future.

The Padres will sign left-hander and international amateur free agent Carlos Alvarez, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon. That's an intriguing development given that the Padres are considered one of the three finalists (alongside the Dodgers and Blue Jays) in the running for Japanese ace Roki Sasaki.
