MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Transportation is taking action ahead of time to be as prepared for upcoming winter weather as possible. “ALDOT crews have been out pretreating today, our interstates and our major U.S. routes and state routes, just based on that traffic volume,” said ALDOT spokeswoman Brantley Kirk.
As snow continues to fall in the Chattahoochee Valley, the Alabama Department of Transportation is monitoring the road conditions in the area. According to ALDOT, the roads and highways in the following counties are considered impassable: Drivers are advised to be careful when driving on the icy roads.

Hundreds of Alabama National Guard service members have been called to duty to help in the winter storm approaching the state. According to a news release, the activation on Jan. 19 involves more than 400 members who will operate out of seven regional facilities from Birmingham to Mobile.
County officials put out a notice that the general public should delay or suspend travel and only emergency vehicles should be on the roads at this time. “Effective January 21, 2025, all roads and bridges in Mobile County should be considered IMPASSABLE until further notice,” the notice said.
