A polar vortex is slated to sweep most of the continental US bringing winter storm warnings and a hazardous freeze to millions.

BECKLEY, W.Va. — West Virginia can be a snowy place. Though not nearly as snowy as Maine or Alaska, it snows much of winter, and winter storms have shaped its culture. This is especially so it the lofty Allegheny Mountains where most of its ski resorts are located.

WASHINGTON — As the nation prepares to usher in a new president, the District is prepping the roads for his Inauguration. Some preps include road closures and Emergency No Parking along some streets. Officials have even said that alleys and garages inside the perimeter may be blocked by cement barriers.

A lobe of the polar vortex will arrive in the United States this weekend, bringing the lowest temperatures in years and snow and ice to the East and Deep South.
