The Canadian government has discontinued permits for crossing the U.S.-Canadian border by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

Thru-hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail are no longer able to enter Canada via a permit, but will have to go to a station of port instead.

Canadian authorities announced the closure at the end of January, stating it "aligns with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which does not allow travelers to enter the U.S. from Canada on the trail.

According to statistics released by the National Immigration Administration (NIA), China saw 958,000 cross-border trips made by foreigners during the holiday, up 22.9 percent from the previous year.

The change aligns with the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol policy, which does not allow hikers to enter the United States on the trail.
