An Aussie dad has claimed to have found a rare substance reportedly worth up to $59,000 per kilogram washed up on a beach following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Around 2,000 Olympic swimming pools worth of sand is estimated to be gone – 80% of Gold Coast’s beaches, according to city mayor Tom Tate. Much of it was gone before Cyclone Alfred even hit, giving the coast a double blow by making it more vulnerable to erosive storm surges when it finally did make land.

The last time a cyclone hit was in 1974, when Wanda hit in January and then two months later, Zoe crossed the coast. Flooding though, is more common. In February 2022, thousands of homes were damaged along much of Australia's east after heavy rain.

Cyclone Alfred struck the east coast of Australia late Friday, unleashing strong winds, rough surf and dangerous rip currents along popular beaches over the weekend. An estimated 10 to 15 inches fell around Brisbane and on Moreton Island during the storm.

Cyclone Alfred has weakened into a tropical low, but its impact remains severe across Queensland and NSW. Over 300,000 people are without power, and flood risks persist as heavy rain lashes Brisbane.
