An Israeli strike on a school in northern Gaza on Saturday killed at least 22 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, while the Israeli army said it targeted a Hamas command center in what used to be a school.

GAZA/CAIRO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Palestinians said an Israeli strike killed at least 22 people in a school sheltering displaced people in southern Gaza City on Saturday, while the Israeli military said the attack targeted a command centre of militant group Hamas.

Hezbollah did not immediately confirm the claim of Akil's killing, which came as a flurry of tit-for-tat bombardments between the enemies raised fears of a full-out war erupting in the Middle East.

The Israeli military's chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said the strike on Beirut's southern Dahiya district killed Ibrahim Akil, a commander of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force, as well as 10 other Hezbollah operatives.

The Israeli military said on Thursday that an air strike killed four militants in the Jenin area of the occupied West Bank. Jenin is a bastion of Palestinian militant groups fighting Israel, and has been a focus of large-scale Israeli military raids launched in late August that the Palestinian health ministry says have killed dozens.

At least 22 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a former school building in Gaza City, Palestinian authorities said on Saturday. At least 30 people were injured, including women and children, the health authority in Gaza said.

Gaza's civil defence agency said an Israeli strike Saturday on a school-turned-shelter in the Palestinian territory's largest city killed 21 people, while Israel's military said it targeted Hamas militants.
