The Providence Public School District (PPSD) and the U.S. Department of Justice have reached a settlement agreement that resolves an investigation into the district’s language instruction services for new immigrant English learners.

The Providence public school district has agreed to settle a case with the US Department of Justice regarding the Newcomer Academy, a high school for new immigrants over the age of 17, that was found to be violating students’ civil rights earlier this year.

Boston Globe Rhode Island reporter Steph Machado joined Kim Kalunian on 12 News at 4 Wednesday to share the outcome of a case involving the civil rights of multilingual learners in Providence.

The closure is just the latest cutback at the 195-year old newspaper, which in recent years has laid off staff, trimmed benefits, and lost thousands of readers under the ownership of Gannett.

The Providence Journal will no longer be printing in Providence. The printing plant, located on Kinsley Avenue, will officially be shutting down in March, according to Gannett’s owner. 136 full- and part-time employees will lose their jobs,
