Premier League clubs spent around £370m in the winter transfer window with Manchester City spending almost as much as the other 19 top-flight teams combined.

Manchester City easily topped the spending charts in the January transfer window with the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez on Deadline Day to complete a busy month for the ailing Premier League champions.

Around two-thirds of Premier League spending this January 2025 transfer window came from Manchester City. Meanwhile local rivals United looked to loan out high earners.

Man City had to do a U-turn on their usual transfer strategy to save their Premier League season, and the spending boom isn't slowing down just yet.

Manchester City have secured the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto for a fee of €60 million (£49.9m/$62.1m). Gonzalez has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and is City’s fourth signing of the window following the arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

Man City needed a midfielder but only valued González's transfer at €40m before they eventually relented on deadline day to pay his €60m release clause. The 23-year-old is a good addition, who knows how to play in the style of a Pep Guardiola team, but it does feel like a bit of a panic move from City.

Manchester City had a busy January transfer window. Overall, they made six signings and Claudio Echeverri will join Pep Guardiola’s squad next month as he is currently on international duty with the Argentina under-20 squad at the South American under-20 Championships.
