May 14, 2014 · The big issues, like the orientalism and "Yellow Peril" tropes are prominent. (Is it just me, or was Shang-Chi's coloring just a tad too yellow?) Terms like "Chinaman" and "chink" definitely would not fly today. Shang-Chi's characterization can be very "Spock-like" and straight forward. At times, his speaking does edge towards fortune cookieism.

There are moments when Shang tries to make the organization more moral, especially in his dealings in the criminal world. I really thought that Shang-Chi trying to convince his siblings to accept his mutant sister was excellently done.

He uses KUNG FU to disarm her and knock her out before she can pull the trigger, and then tells her to change and return when she's ready to show her heart and not her bravado. Their subsequent training session goes as you might expect, with a fighting montage.

6 days ago · As an aside, what is hilarious to me is that despite all of the craziness in Marvel with qi (The Mandarin, Shang Chi, the Cat Iron Fist, Immortal Weapons, etc) or magic ninja skillz (The Hand, The Chaste, Daredevil, Elektra) or just 'super-awesome-special martial arts' (Mantis) Cap doesn't do any of that stuff.

May 20, 2015 · Shang Chi was introduced nicely, and it was interesting to see Zu's three main henchman and their varied personalities. Laughing Skull appears slightly mad and murder happy, Danny is on a quest for revenge, while Red Sai (who, along with her students, feels like the scariest of the three) is simply bound by tradition.

May 16, 2024 · Alex Ross also said that he was influenced by the MCU when doing the heroes side so this explains some of the additions (Shang-Chi, Falcon) and exclusions (Ms. Marvel, Quicksilver, Hank Pym, Wasp). Nick Fury was supposed to be part of it but because he looked different from the MCU version, Alex Ross had to scrap him.

Jan 26, 2025 · I didn't care for Shang-chi till Gene Yang and Greg Pak wrote him. I liked Yang's additions to Shang-Chi's mythos and hope the weapon Houses pop up elsewhere. The Immortal Weapons need a reappearance. I'm hoping Pinpoint and Amulet take off in 2025 .
